Miya Bailey

Welcome to Voices from The Margins, an organization dedicated to amplifying the voices of those impacted by incarceration and advocating for meaningful change within the justice system.

With experience working as a deputy sheriff, corrections officer, and 911 dispatcher in the state of Mississippi, I have witnessed firsthand the realities of the criminal justice system — both strengths and its deep flaws.

During my time in these roles, I met countless young men and women behind bars who wanted to change their lives but lacked the resources to do so. I also witnessed inmates being mistreated by corrections officers, reinforcing my belief that the system often fails those it’s meant to rehabilitate.

Beyond my professional experience, incarceration has touched my life deeply in personal ways. Everyone around me has experienced incarceration - whether directly or indirectly - and I have firsthand experience of what it’s like to have a loved one behind bars. It’s a raw and emotional reality that fuels my mission every single day, reminding me that the impact of incarceration extends far beyond prison walls, affecting families and entire communities.

These experiences inspired me to take action and work toward systemic change. I founded Voices From the Margins to provide a platform for incarcerated individuals to share their stories, and advocate for justice, and access opportunities for rehabilitation and reentry. I believe that every individual deserves dignity, fairness, and a second chance.

In addition to my background in criminal justice, I bring a passion for photography, using it as a powerful storytelling tool to capture the human experience behind incarceration. My work spans documentary, landscape, street, and portrait photography, allowing me to shed light on untold stories and bring awareness to the challenges faced by incarcerated individuals and their families.

Through advocacy, storytelling. and strategic partnerships, I am committed to bridging the gap between policy and personal experience to push for systemic reform.

Join me in the mission to amplify voices, inspire change, and work toward a more and just and equitable system.
