From Classrooms to Cellblocks: The Unseen Pipeline

Every morning, millions of children walk into schools that are supposed to prepare them for bright futures. Yet for many, particularly in marginalized communities, schools become gateways to incarceration. The “zero-tolerance” polices and over-policing of students, especially Black and Brown children, criminalize behavior that should be addressed through counseling and mentorship.

Take, for example, Marcus, an bright 14-year-pld who loved drawing. After a scuffle with a classmate over a pencil. he was suspended and later expelled under the zero-tolerance policy. The incident was reported to local authorities, and Marcus found himself facing charges. With no access to proper legal representation or community support, Marcus became another statistic in the school-to-prison pipeline.

The solution? Invest in counseling, restorative justice programs, and equitable educational resources. Schools should uplift, not condemn. When we focus on supporting the children like Marcus, we can dismantle the pipeline and build bridges to opportunity.
